Setting up a DarkRp Server (Again)

Recommended Posts

Alright, so In the past I tried to set up a DarkRP server but honestly lost interest in actually establishing it and getting a player base. This time however there is a driving force:

I'm getting paid to run and maintain one and actually need to get a player base.

Since this is still one of the best gaming communities around I have some questions for you guys:

1. What are some things that have really bugged you about DarkRP servers you've played on?

2. What are some things you've always wanted to see in a server but no one seems to have done?

3. What's your favorite map for DarkRP?

4. What made you stop playing on a Dark RP Server?

Also, any general tips or suggestions for a server?

1. RDM!!!! People who don't obey the rule to leave a person alone for 10 min after you raided them, because i'm sick and tired of setting up base, having printers stolen, buying new printers, then having them stolen before I break even. people who disobey NLR: If I kill you during a raid, it doesn't mean you have to join the police and kill me for no reason.

2. Not much, but I would like to see a casino type thing.

3. I have only played the downtown maps, but i prefer downtown V2 B2. It's old, but it appeals to me.

4. Spending all my money on the ULTRALUXEDIAMOND printer, only to have douchebag admin say in ooc chat, "getting a bit laggy, restarting server"

In a post I made a while back, I recommended rp_locality, and I just wanna make the warning that the map is quite small, but it has a sewer, so people will have room to make bases. If you are going to have a huge 40-60 player server, don't run locality. If it's like 20-30 players, probably. Take in player input.

On the topic of downtown, don't run downtown. It's overplayed and is pretty boring. The older versions have a sewer that is way too complicated, and takes forever to actually memorize it, making it a bitch to navigate. The newer versions don't even have a sewer, and just have generic buildings, making the map rather boring to walk around in. I prefer maps that have a lot of hiding spots, actually interesting terrain, and isn't on every server, ever.

Evocity is alright. Giant, so if you're gonna run a 60 player server, run it. Not exactly obscure, but you can find a couple servers running it.

rp_bangclaw is probably my favorite map. It's kinda a mix between the more complicated-ness of locality and the semi-large size of downtown. It's not that obscure, but not many servers run it. It's got some good sewers, a good PD, a nice outskirts, and it's generally interesting.

There are plenty of other maps, some look really good, but I haven't really played them, so I cannot say. I highly recommend bangclaw.

Would like to expand on these ideas.

1.) To reduce people reporting about NLR, a person who is killed should not be able to do damage to anyone who damaged the player 5 minutes before they died or approach their base that just got raided for 5 minutes.

2.) An actual casino would be great, like with card games. (not just slot machines)

4.) If it were possible, (and it might be,) when a server unexpectedly shuts off, the money spent on buying money printers should be refunded, but only on things like crashes. A way to do this (in lua) would be to set a ConVar for how many money printers a player has. If the server crashes, when it restarts then it could refund the money depending on the variable.

Explaination:

If 'nigger' had two A money printers and one B money printer, and 'faggot' had one A money printer, three B money printers, and one C money printer , the variables would be this:

nigger_moneyprinter_A = 2
nigger_moneyprinter_B = 1
nigger_moneyprinter_C = 0

faggot_moneyprinter_A = 1
faggot_moneyprinter_B = 3
faggot_moneyprinter_C = 1

-- this will be run on server load

if SERVER then
 for k,v in pairs(player.GetAll()) do
     givemoney(v, GetConVarNumber(v:Name().."_moneyprinter_A")*1000)
     givemoney(v, GetConVarNumber(v:Name().."_moneyprinter_B")*2000)
     givemoney(v, GetConVarNumber(v:Name().."_moneyprinter_C")*3000)
     v:Name()_moneyprinter_A = 0
     v:Name()_moneyprinter_B = 0
 	v:Name()_moneyprinter_C = 0
   end
end

-- v is userdata
-- givemoney(player, amount) would be the function that gives a player money

When the server restarts, 'nigger' would receive $4000, and 'faggot' would receive $10000.

-snip-

Genius idea. Though I've never had any crash issues as the server I usually play on has a vote restart and really never crashes, that would be extremely annoying to put up with. To be safe I never buy any high tier printers unless I'm basing with good friends that won't call over a pack of thugs and let them fuck the place up.

The GMod update before the most recent one caused the DarkRP server I frequent to continuously crash. (uptime 30-60 mins before crashing)

It stopped crashing though, so I'm guessing Garry fixed the problem. Anyways, the refund of money printers after a crash would be a feature that would want players to go to the server, knowing that even if the server were a bit unstable, they didn't have to worry about losing money.
